Sarah Smith MA, LMFTA

amiPhilosophy of Care

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, young adults, elders, the LGBTQ+ community, and parents who are looking for a place to heal and grow.  With a firm belief that people are the experts on their own lives, I counsel within the framework of beliefs and values that they bring into the room. Having spent four years living in developing nations, I have a deep level of respect for the diversity of human experience and the interconnectedness of beliefs, relationships, environment, and mental health.

I believe that understanding the narratives we have about ourselves and how they came to be can help us break free from limitations, limiting beliefs, and the boxes we often find ourselves in. Re-writing our narratives also help us to replace shame with compassion and understanding and helps us to redefine our sense of self. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, attachment based, and takes into account the many systems we are a part of, the complexities of our thought processes, and the current impact of our unmet childhood, adolescent, and adult needs. I enjoy working with clients who may be skeptical or nervous about coming to therapy and utilize a whole-person approach that includes providing information about resources outside of talk therapy that may offer support and healing.
